Girls Varsity/JV Swimming · Meng, Ashleigh Chappel pace swimmers

GCHS girls 5th of 16 teams at Heights Invite

Two individual medals and two relay finishes in the top five were among the highlights for the Garden City High School girls swimming team at Friday’s Wichita Heights Invitational.

With just 10 swimmers entered, the Lady Buffs still were good enough to place fifth in the team race, finishing with 179 points. Derby was the dominant team with 326 points, followed by Maize High with 250, Winfield at 240 and Wichita-Trinity Academy with 214.5. The Buffs were just one point ahead of sixth-place Wichita Heights and 2.5 points ahead of Maize South.

Sophomore Avery Meng’s second-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke was the team’s highest place. Her time of 1:16.17 was the third time she’s lowered her mark in the event, and was the second day in a row after they had hosted a Western Athletic Conference quad at home on Thursday.

Senior Ashleigh Chappel’s 100-yard freestyle time of 1:03.44 left her in sixth place to earn a medal as well. Lana Rodriguez posted a season-best mark of 1:13.41 to place 10th in the 100-yard backstroke.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Rodriguez, Meng, Paige Chappel and Payton Tull clocked a 2:07.66 to place fifth. The 200-yard freestyle relay group of Meng, Tull and the two Chappel sisters took fourth with a time of 1:54.25.

Six others placed between seventh and 10th in their respective events.

“It was our toughest meet so far,” head coach Jennifer Meng said. “So we’re excited that we placed so well considering those two factors (the other being diving).”

With the team now having four meets under their belt, Meng said the Lady Buffs were figuring out how to address the team’s areas of strength and weakness.

“We’re figuring out our weaknesses – and sprinting is the main thing we need to work on right now,” Meng said. “Our sprints need to be faster.”

The Lady Buffs will be back on the road on Thursday, April 8, at the Emporia Invitational. First swim is scheduled for 4 p.m.
